Solomon’s Makaen Hastings – NexTech Wireless “One To Watch”

The Nex Tech One to Watch may be a name you’ve heard in basketball circles already. Only a freshman, Makaen Hastings has been turning heads for a while. The Solomon High School standout has big plans for Solomon basketball.

“Freshman year is good and fun. Individually I’ve put up good numbers as a freshman, but would like to have had more victories,” said Hastings. “I wanted to be top three in scoring, All-League first team and Newcomer of the Year. I wanted to help lead our team to a good season.”

The point guard for the Gorillas said the chemistry and depth are two reasons this team will continue to improve. “Players know what other players can do with the ball,” said Hastings.

The ultimate goal is a state title. “We want to win a State Championship,” said Hastings.

High school career goals are lofty, but this court General can get in done.  “I want to score 1500 points, 300 assists. My ultimate goal is to play in McDonald’s, Jordan or Iverson All-American games and leave my mark in Solomon basketball history,’ said Hastings.

To get there, Hastings understands it will take hard work and a dedication to his craft. “ It will take the same thing I’ve been doing since I was two years old. Hard work and live in the gym perfecting my craft,” said Hastings.

With encouragement from his parents, Hastings is confident he can reach his goals. “My parents, my dad always pushes me hard everyday. My mom helps me with recovery. My on court influence is Trae Young, because of his exciting play, plus he’s my size,” said Hastings.

Hastings plans to improve in all aspects of his game and help his team succeed. “To put my teammates in position to win the game. Be vocal on the court, lead by example, even though I’m just a freshman, I can handle the pressure,” said Hastings.

Hastings is certainly one to watch and could become one of the top players in the class 2023.
