Canton-Galva’s Cason Mastre – Athlete Spotlight Presented by Salina Tech

Cason Mastre of Canton-Galva was voted the Salina Area Preseason Wide Receiver of the Year. Last season, Mastre was a first team all-league selection, as well as honorable mention all-state. He caught 31 balls for 630 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Eagles, which advanced to the 8-Man Division I semifinals.

“My individual goals for the upcoming season include 1,000-plus receiving yards and 10-plus touchdowns,” Mastre said. “The team goal for this year is to go 13-0 on the season.”

As a pass catcher, Mastre said his strength is being able to run after the catch, but he knows his game has an area that needs improving.

“One area I would like to improve on is my break out of my route,” Mastre said. “I have been improving on my route running in strides, along with increasing my size this summer.”

Losing one game shy of the state title game was heartbreaking for Mastre and the Eagles, but falling in the semifinals to Wheat State League rival Little River made it even more painful.

Those feelings have led to motivated workouts this summer.

“The loss to Little River last season drives the team motivation to get back to 1-0 come week one,” Mastre said.
