Wellington’s Val Norwood – Athlete Spotlight Presented By Visit Salina

By Hayden Swope

Wellington’s Val Norwood is back for the Crusaders, and after a standout sophomore season, she’s ready to take her game to another level.

Last season, Norwood was named a first team all-league and all-state player, while also being named the league MVP. Norwood plans to add onto those accolades as Wellington returns a strong team around her.

Norwood spent endless hours on the court by herself and with coaches to solidify her strengths and improve her weaknesses for the upcoming season.

“To prepare for the season I have spent a lot of time in the gym,” Norwood said. “I have worked with my coach and by myself to get my shot off quicker, and different moves for me to create my own shot.”

After Wellington’s 21-2 record and state tournament appearance last season, Norwood hopes to continue the Lady Crusaders’ success, and bring home a state title.

“I am going to focus on having fun and working hard so we can continue to have a good season like we have in the past,” Norwood said.

Norwood has lots of decisions to make with two full seasons ahead of her, however playing the game of basketball will be part of the plan.

“I plan on playing basketball in college, however I don’t know where yet,” Norwood said.
