State Soccer Recap

Class 6A
Olathe East finished their 17-4 season on top after a 1-0 win over Shawnee Mission West 1-0.

Washburn Rural finished third with a 2-1 win over Dodge City.

Class 5A
Once again, the Maize South Mavericks won the class 5A state championship after a 2-1 win
over Blue Valley Southwest.

After breaking the state record for goals scored all-time, Geromel needed another title.
“It feels amazing winning another one, like it was the ending we wanted, worked for, and
deserved,” Maize South senior Vitor Geromel said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better four years
and couldn’t have succeeded without my teammates, coaches, and family's support.”

The Mavericks’ Geromel ends his career as a two-time state champion and will go down as one
of the best players the state has ever seen.

In just their second state trip ever, the Salina South Cougars fell short in the semifinal to runner-
up Blue Valley Southwest but ultimately bounced back and finished third after a 3-2 win over St.
Thomas Aquinas.

Class 4-1A
Bishop Miege won its eighth state title after a win over Bishop Ward 5-2, tying St. Thomas
Aquinas’ record from the early 2000s.

Wichita Trinity finished third with a 2-0 win over McPherson thanks to two goals scored by
Cooper Matthews.
