Marcus Johnson Wichita Southeast High School – Poll Winner Presented By Visit Wichita

By Matt Browning

Wichita Southeast sophomore punter Marcus Johnson earned honorable mention all-league honors last season and he is planning on that being just the beginning.

Johnson’s offseason was non-stop as he attended multiple camps and was on the field working on fundamentals.

“During the offseason I have attended a few camps – Sharp Performance Camp and Nicholls State University Camp,” Johnson said. “I also have been doing weight training and conditioning with my football team this summer, along with some extra workouts on my own. A few times a week I’ll head out to a nearby soccer field and work on my punts.”

Johnson is adding a new role this year and it is one that he is excited about.

“So not only will I punt, I will be trying out a new position as linebacker,” Johnson said. “Coach Bagley has done a great job preparing me for the new role.”

Distance on his punts was a focal point in Johnson’s offseason workouts. He hopes that by doing this, the accolades will continue to grow, too.

“While at the soccer fields I really tried to work on positioning myself, my follow throughs and making sure I’m kicking with my laces,” Johnson said. “I’ve been practicing my technique even off the field, just trying to keep up with the repetitiveness. That way, I’ll be even more comfortable this season. My freshman season was my first time punting.”
