Kapaun Mount Carmel Volleyball – Team of the Month Presented By Visit Wichita

By Blake Chadwick

Coming into the season with high hopes, first-year coach Heather Holovach has already set the bar high for the rest of her career as the Kapaun Mount Carmel volleyball team has won 23 of their first 30 matches.

“For a team that has a new head coach, assistant coach, and JV coach, lost both varsity setters, an All-City outside hitter, and their libero, they have gone above and beyond what I imagined,” Holovach said. “I know there is a lot of fun to come.”

Holovach has had to figure out her coaching approach quickly.

“I would say I am honest, firm but fair, straightforward and positive with a focus on overall personal development,” Holovach said.

The coaching style has led to an offensive attack that has helped them dominate all year. Junior Kaitlyn Cure is leading the way with 50 service aces and 136 kills. McCoy Phister has been stellar, running a 5-1 for the Crusaders.

“McCoy Phister has really surprised us this year,” Holovach said. “Her athleticism is unmatched because she can play any spot on the floor, she hits for us at times, she blocks on the right side, she digs crazy balls and runs all over for her team.”

With four goals on their mind to keep improving every week — mastering the defense, communicating and working on our team relationships, and having fun — the Crusaders are poised for a deep postseason run.
