Cunningham’s Luke McGuire – Athlete Spotlight Presented By Visit Salina

By Hayden Swope

The first team all-league running back Luke McGuire of Cunningham was a core piece of the Wildcat offense last season. McGuire returns this year, and is ready to play under the lights.

“There are so many things that I am excited for this season,” McGuire said. “Feeling the electricity from our crowd, playing with the best teammates in the state and putting some pads on for the fun of it.”

Offseason training started early, and as soon as summer began, McGuire was disciplining himself with surrounding coaches and players.

“For the offseason preparation I have attended morning workouts, an individual camp, a team camp, and a showcase,” McGuire said.

Hoping to improve his weaknesses, McGuire spent endless amounts of time working on the field.

I wanted to be better at making quicker decisions on both sides of the ball,” McGuire said. “I did this by going to camps and taking a lot of reps.”

After a winning 2022 season, McGuire and the Wildcats are hoping for another playoff run.

“As a team we want to have a repeat of last year, and defensively lead the state in points allowed,” McGuire said. “Individually I want to minimize my mistakes and make important plays.”
