Concordia’s Carlie Carlgren – Athlete Spotlight Presented By Visit Salina

By Blake Chadwick

Coming off of a first-team all-league season as a junior, Concordia senior Carlie Carlgren has had her fair share of adversity playing the sport she loves.

An outside hitter and left back, Carlgren is coming off of injury after tearing her meniscus for the second time and forcing her to the sidelines.

“My personal goal this season is to get healthy and to be better than I was before my injury,” Carlgren said. “My job on my team is to be a leader and help my team come together.”

Head coach Rio Brown who has been at Concordia for 11 years and knows just how special Carlgren is. Brown holds Carlgren and the rest of the team to a high standard, and in return the team is competitive every year.

“Our team goals include improving and competing every day, having positive attitudes, giving effort and communicating effectively,” Brown said.

Being a four-year starter, captain and vocal leader, Carlgren and the Concordia team have been working on their continued journey of getting better.

Carlgren led the way as a junior with 225 kills and 297 digs.

“Carlie is a competitor and leads by example always giving her best effort each day in practice and in games,” Brown said.

This year, the senior has only been able to play in a couple games so far but has been pivotal making her presence felt right away.

“My mentality has been what can I do to help my team improve from the sidelines and once I can play again,” Carlgren said. “Once I was able to play, my mentality has been improving each time I step on and off the court.”
