Clay Center’s Dawn Richter – Coach of the Month Presented By Salina Regional Orthopedic Clinic

By Matt Browning

For 19 years, Dawn Richter has been the head coach of the Clay Center softball team and according to her, it seems like she just started yesterday.

“Time sure flies when you are having fun,” Richter said. “And it’s so fun to coach these girls. I’ve been blessed with great kids and great softball players. And this year is no exception with great girls.”

Clay Center has had success over Richter’s tenure, most recently making the 4A Tournament last season. But more than results, Richter wants her players to represent the school and community in a way that makes everyone proud.

“With so much going on in our world these days we emphasize good sportsmanship on and off the field,” Richter said. “I remind these girls that everywhere you go to carry yourself in a positive manner because you may never know who is watching and could possibly give you your first opportunity for a job. I’ve seen it happen so I encourage them to be a positive and respectful player and person.”

Richter has many fond memories over her 19 years, but seeing her players succeed in not just softball but other activities, stands out.

“Just to see them succeed in all they do whether it’s with FFA or band or all other sports and academics I think spills out in them on the softball field,” Richter said. “I tell them they are only kids once so enjoy and have fun.”
