Chapman’s Elyssa Frieze – Winning Edge Student Athlete Of The Month Presented By Visit Salina

By Matt Browning

Chapman’s Elyssa Frieze has been playing tennis since first grade and she is looking to conclude her career in a special way. Frieze lost in the 4A singles final last season to Topeka Hayden’s Ainzley Zulueta, but Zulueta is not eligible for the fall season, so Frieze is in position to win the singles crown.

“I am really excited for my senior year because I play more relaxed knowing I have to appreciate each game,” Frieze said. “I have made a great name for myself these past three years, and I am excited for the opportunity to represent Lady Irish Tennis one more time.”

Frieze focused on her net skills throughout the summer.

“That is definitely something I would like to improve for this season,” Frieze said. “I feel like my groundstrokes are a little ahead of the game coming into the season so my main focus has been net play.”

To start the season, Frieze will have 74 individual wins, so getting to 100 is important to her, despite it being difficult. Couple that goal with where she could finish at state and Frieze is excited for what the season could hold.

“I am coming back as last year’s state runner-up and I could not be more excited,” Frieze said. “I have now one 2 state titles in track and would love nothing more than to pick one up in tennis as well.”
