The Canton-Galva football team was chosen as the Visit Wichita Team of the Month for August. The Eagles lost to Little River is the sectional round of the 8-Man Division I playoffs a year ago, after starting the season 10-1.
With so many players back from that team, expectations are high for Canton-Galva again in 2022.
“We have very high expectations for the upcoming 2022 football season,” Canton-Galva coach Shelby Hoppes said. “This year’s team has a large and very experienced senior class that has been part of deep playoff runs in each of their first three years. They understand what it’s going to take and how hard the grind is.”
Offensively, the Eagles are going to be able to score at will on any opponent. They return quarterback Garrett Maltbie, who was an all-state selection, Cason Mastre, who was an all-district wide receiver and T.J. Koehn, who started at tight end. Canton-Galva also have Wheatland-Grinnell wide receiver transfer Jett Vincent.
“It has been fun to watch over the summer,” Hoppes said.
This senior class won state as freshmen and Hoppes said they have been talking about adding a final chapter to their careers this season.
“We set three team goals every year and number one on all the guy’s list this year was making it back to Newton,” Hoppes said. “After coming up short the last couple years, they are hungry to make that run back to Newton and have a chance to play for a state title.”
